Parental involvement

At Language School de Vlieger, we have asked ourselves how teachers and parents can mutually support each other to promote children's development. We are convinced that if we act together and engage with each other, we can do so in the right way.

Workshops

The informative parent workshops provided by Taalschool de Vlieger during a school year are meetings designed to support and involve parents in the development of their child(ren). During these workshops, parents are first allowed to observe the classroom and then various topics are discussed.

  • For example, the multilingualism workshop, where parents learn the importance of speaking the mother tongue and how parents can encourage speaking a second language.
  • Or the general health workshops provided from the Public Health Service, with tips on healthy eating and exercise.
  • The dentist also comes to school every year to explain oral hygiene to parents and children.
  • A library staff member is also in school regularly to explain the school library to parents and children, focusing on the importance of reading and how parents can promote it at home.

The workshops provide practical information and strengthen cooperation between school and parents. During the workshops, several interpreters are often present, there is collaboration with various external partners and an opportunity to ask questions.

Parenting support

Parenting is learning and sharing together. The GGD offers parenting support for parents at Language School de Vlieger. This consists of a series of four meetings. In small groups, we talk together about parenting: what is sometimes difficult, what goes well, and what it is like to raise children in a new country. An interpreter is present so that everyone can participate in his or her own language.

Topics we discuss include:

  • Growing up in two cultures: what do you recognise from your own upbringing, and what do you see in the Netherlands?
  • Positive parenting and complimenting
  • Setting boundaries and dealing with undesirable behaviour
  • Primary school and the importance of collaborating with school
  • What you yourself have inherited from your parents, and what you want to pass on from that or do differently with your own children.

There is plenty of room to exchange experiences. Parents often recognise a lot in each other's stories and learn with and from each other. Together with the youth nurse, parents discover how positive parenting brings out the best in their children and know they can always turn to the Public Health Service and the school for support and advice.

Bridge officer

A bridge officer helps parents/carers, school and possibly other professionals work well together. This means that the bridge officer is there to listen, answer questions and offer help when needed.

At Language School de Vlieger, Jo-ann de Jonge is the bridge officer and she will be happy to help you with the points below. Feel free to welcome and speak to her.

What can she do for you?

  • Help with questions about school: don't understand something or have concerns about your child?
  • Parenting support: do you have questions about how to help your child with learning or behaviour?
  • Contact with other professionals/organisations: do you need support, such as help with care?
  • Good cooperation between home and school: together we create a nice atmosphere so that your child feels safe and can learn!
  • Finding solutions: if there are problems or concerns, I help spot them early and together we find a solution!

How can you reach her?

  • You are always welcome in the school and can speak to her there
  • To call the school phone number (tel: 0321 381 078)
  • Through the ziber kwieb app, you can send her a message with your question or to schedule a meeting

Every Wednesday from 11am to 12pm there is a drop-in hour. You can drop by anytime at this time with a question, concern or for a chat.

Internal contact

Everywhere there is work, there are occasional misunderstandings or mistakes. At our school, it is no different. If there are problems or complaints, try to discuss them first with the person concerned. Can't work it out together? Then there is the internal contact person.

The internal contact person at a primary school plays an important role in providing support and protection for children, parents and staff alike. The internal contact person is someone to whom children, parents and staff can turn if they feel unsafe or if there are problems they cannot resolve themselves.

The internal contact person is there to listen and offer support, for example in cases of bullying, undesirable behaviour or personal problems. Everything discussed remains confidential. But an internal contact person does have a mandate to act. Advice can be given and referrals can be made if necessary.

The internal contact person is there to promote a safe and supportive environment. The internal contact person helps children, parents and staff feel heard and supported, which promotes their well-being and development.

For children, the first step is to go to their own teacher with complaints or problems. Together, they talk and see if there is a solution. If this fails, a child can go to the internal contact person.

There is a complaints procedure for parents, carers and staff, it consists of the following steps:

  • consultation with those directly involved, often this is the teacher. In case of insufficient results, this follows:
  • consultation with management. If insufficient result follows:
  • consultation with the internal contact person. In case of insufficient result, it follows:
  • involvement of the external confidential advisor. If the result is insufficient, this will follow:
  • submitting the complaint to the independent complaints committee.

As a child, parent or staff member, you can go directly to the internal contact person at any time with a concern or problem. Together, they will consider the best path to follow. You can also contact the external confidential advisor at any time.

At Taalschool de Vlieger, Marjolein van de Werfhorst is the internal contact person. You can reach her by walking into the school, calling the school (phone no: 0321 381 078) or by sending a message via the Ziber Kwieb app.

Parents' room

In September 2025, the parent room will be opened at Language School de Vlieger. Every Wednesday morning, you as a parent/carer are welcome in the school. The parents‘ room is all about ’meeting each other'; we also want to learn from and with each other. Jo-ann and Marjolein will be here and look forward to meeting many parents!
