A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my whole soul, like this sweet spring morning that I enjoy with all my heart. I am alone and feel the charm of existence in this place created for the bliss of souls like mine.



I am so happy, my dear friend, so engrossed in the wonderful feeling of mere quiet existence, that I neglect my talents. Right now, I should not be able to draw even one stroke; and yet I feel that I have never been a greater artist than I am now.



When, as the lovely valley around me swirls with vapour, and the afternoon sun hits the top of the impenetrable canopy of my trees, and only a few stray rays sneak into the inner sanctum, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the babbling brook; and as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unfamiliar plants catch my eye: When I hear the hum of the little world among the stalks, and become familiar with the innumerable indescribable forms of the insects and flies, I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his image, and the breath of that universal love that carries and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness engulfs my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then
