A day at school

To give an impression of a school day at Taalschool de Vlieger, we have briefly described for each moment what pupils in the lower and upper school do. This will give you a good idea of how the day is structured and how we combine structure, play and learning.

Walk-in and circle discussion: During walk-in, the children work with developmental materials to develop their skills. The children then do a vocabulary-focused activity during the circle discussion. In this way, they work on their language development in a playful way and learn new words in Dutch.

Outdoor play and break: First, children play outside to get some exercise and unwind. Then they eat and drink. Inside, a moment is also taken to read aloud from a book, so the children are introduced to language and story in a relaxed way.

Play/work & day end: The pupils play in the different play corners and choose their own activity. Together with the teacher, they evaluate the morning: what went well, what did they learn? Sometimes we choose to offer a maths activity. Then the day is rounded off. Finally, the toddlers are allowed to play outside for a while.

Lunch break: During lunch break, some children go home for lunch, while other children who cannot go home stay in school under supervision.

In the afternoon, the 4-year-olds are free. We start the afternoon the same as the morning. After the circle time, the children first play in the corners and we end the day with playing outside. For the groups above, the afternoon focuses on working on the weekly task, with attention to maths and language development. The day is often ended creatively or sportily, for example with crafts, cooking or a sports or swimming lesson.

Starting circuit & World of Words: Students start the day with a short, varied activity. They then start working on vocabulary, linked to a current theme. In this way, they learn new words in meaningful context and work in a targeted way on their language development.

Food & drink and break: The children will eat and drink, play outside and there will be reading or watching something relaxing.

Reading and Social Emotional Development: there is daily reading to enhance reading pleasure and language skills. There is also room for social emotional development: a group moment where children learn to deal with feelings, cooperate and treat each other respectfully.

Silent reading, maths, sports & creativity: In the afternoon, pupils may read silently, have maths and often do a creative or sports activity, such as handicrafts, drawing or swimming.
